1931 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
Des Moines

James (Jim) Ellis Phipps, 80, of Des Moines, formerly of Pilot Mound, passed away on Monday, August 13, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, surrounded by his family.

A Masonic service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, August 17, at the Walter ~ Schroeder Funeral Home located at Fifth & Story Streets in Boone. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the service time, with the family present at this time to greet friends. Burial will be in the Pilot Mound Cemetery in Pilot Mound, Iowa.

Jim was born on September 6, 1931 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Evert and Leona (Johnson) Phipps. He graduated from Pilot Mound High School in 1949.

As a member of the Command Control Headquarters of Iowa, Jim retired in 1979 from the Iowa Army National Guard at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, after earning his pilot wings in 1961 and serving with the National Guard for 30 years. Jim continued to work at Camp Dodge as a Radiological Maintenance Engineer until his retirement in 1986. Prior to his employment at Camp Dodge, Jim served as a fireman on the Chicago & North Western Railway and the Illinois Central Railroad of Fort Dodge.

Jim was a 50 year member of the Mirza Lodge 609 in Pilot Mound, as well as a member of the ZA-GA-ZIG Shrine of Altoona (Bowlers Unit).

He enjoyed fishing, boating, bowling, gardening and spending time with his family. He was a fan of the I-Cubs and attended home games. His greatest joy was taking his beloved dog Snoopy for walks.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents.

He is mourned by his three daughters, Pattijo of Des Moines, Iowa; Joyce White (Gary) of Des Moines, Iowa; Julee Molle (Terry) of Nevada, Iowa; six grandchildren, Mark, Tony and Chris Abuhl, Kristi Elliott and her husband Jason and Brandon and Brad Molle; ten great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson; his former wife Luene of Des Moines; his close friend, Louise of Des Moines and his best friend Snoopy.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests memorials be given to the Shrine Hospital for Children in care of the ZA-GA-ZIG Shrine Altoona or the Animal Rescue League of Central Iowa in Des Moines.
