Raymond Edward McConkey, 91, passed away at Taylor House Hospice Saturday, September 15, 2012.

Raymond was born July 17, 1921 to Edgar and Sarah (Morgan) McConkey and lived most of his life in Des Moines. He graduated from East High School in 1940 and proudly served in the U.S. Army 9th Armored Tank Division from 1943 to 1945. Raymond worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years and was a buyer at the bulk mail center. He retired in 1977. Raymond was a member of AMVETS and the Fairgrounds Neighborhood Group. He enjoyed traveling and camping with his grandkids. Raymond was also a huge Cubs and NASCR fan and he loved country music and attending Little League Baseball games.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jean Eddy; great-grandson, Cory Heck; brothers, Don, Robert and Wayne McConkey; and his sister, Darlene Lewis.

Those left to cherish Raymond's memory include his daughters, Judy Heck and Bonnie McConkey; grandchildren, Sherri Kingery, Mark (Lori) McWilliams, Melvin Eddy, Kenny (Teresa) Heck and Sue (Kelly) VanGundy; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many extended relatives and friends. He will be missed dearly by those who knew him.

According to Raymond's final wishes, his body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. followed by burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery. ~ The Des Moines (IA) Register Fri 28 Sept 2012.
