Des MoinesLucy Bell Griffith, 92, died April 28, 2011 at the Iowa Life Center in Des Moines.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held Iles Funeral Homes - Dunn's Chapel from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday. A Vigil service will follow at 7 p.m.
Lucy was born on November 22, 1918 to Peter and Martha Bell in St. Mary's, Iowa. She attended the Mercy School of Nursing where she graduated in June 1940 and began her nursing career at Mercy Hospital. She met a young physician, Dr. Thomas Ray Griffith. After years of being courted by him she finally accepted his proposal and they were married on February 22, 1947. They had two children, Thomas and Joan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Thomas Ray Griffith II; her son, Thomas Ray Griffith III; her grandson, Thomas Ray Griffith IV; sisters, Mary Wilgenbusch, Theresa DePhillips and Esther Jones.
Lucy is survived by her daughter, Joan Lyons (Andy); granddaughters, Jennifer and Laura; brother, Joe Bell and sister, Geneva Halverson.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful, caring staff at the Iowa Jewish Life Center and those of Southern Care Hospice of Des Moines.
Lucy always said, "Give me flowers when I'm alive." Since we always do what Lucy wants, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Iowa Jewish Life Center.
