County Pioneer to be Buried This Afternoon

Funeral services for John Copeland Smith, 91 years old, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nell Winters, 3123 Oxford avenue, Sunday afternoon, will be held at Dunn’s funeral home this afternoon at 3 o’clock. Burial will be made in Glendale cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born in Franklin county, Kentucky, in 1833, coming with his parents to Illinois. After the death of his mother, the family returned to Kentucky. They came to Iowa in 1847, where a permanent home was established. A “squatters” claim was taken in Delaware township, Polk county.

In 1863, Mr. Smith married Miss Emma Crane. Ten children were born to this union, six of whom are living. They are Lincoln G., and Dr. Charles F. Smith, Mrs. George Barclay, Mrs. Nell Winters, Mrs. Alice Peterson, and Bess Smith, all living in Des Moines.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Central Christian church of this city.
