Gordon Wayne Opel died February 3, 2013 at Taylor House Hospice after a short illness. He was 90.

Gordon, a Des Moines native, graduated from East High School and Drake University. He was a WWII veteran, and he served in the Iowa Air Guard Reserve. He worked for Des Moines Public Schools, starting as a business teacher. He became a guidance counselor and served at Lincoln High School, Roosevelt High School, Brody Middle School, and East High School, where he retired as Pupil Services Coordinator.

He married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Funk. They had two daughters. Each daughter had one son. Gordon was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council many times. Gordon had many loyal friends. He enjoyed his coffee groups.

Gordon was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years; his younger daughter; and his younger grandson. His memory will be cherished by his remaining daughter and grandson.

According to his wishes, he was cremated. A graveside service will be held at a later time.
