Herman Howard Kirkpatrick, 90, died on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at Westover Baptist Church located at 63rd and Hickman Road in Des Moines. Burial will be held at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Herman was born on November 6, 1922 in Mount Vernon, Iowa to Kenneth and Dorothy (Sherk) Kirkpatrick. Herman was a WWII Army veteran. When he was attending Clemson College, Herman met Evelyn Todd. After his military service, they married on January 27, 1946. He earned his masters degree in physics at Iowa State University. He taught physics for 38 years at Roosevelt High School, retiring in 1989. Herman had a passion for teaching that continued after retirement, impacting many lives. Herman and Evelyn were charter members of Westover Baptist Church, a church they helped to organize in 1955. He found joy in serving the Lord in church activities.

Herman will be remembered for his faith in God and love for his family. He will be missed by his five children: David Kirkpatrick of Dallas, TX; Lawrence (Carol) Kirkpatrick of Bellevue, NE; Bonnie (Steve) Garman of Auburn, ME; Jean (Tom) Hollis of Clairton, PA; and Janice Kirkpatrick of Clive; eight grandchildren: Sarah (Eric) Ewing with three children, Lily, Isaac, and Nathan; Laura (Aaron) Klassen with four children, Renae, Laryssa, Rosalyn, and Lydia; Aaron Kirkpatrick; Nathanael and Elisabeth Garman; Andrew, Tiffany, and Ashley Hollis; sisters, Joyce (Gene) Mathern of Muscatine and Phyllis (Wayne) Wasta of Decorah.

Herman was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Kirkpatrick; parents, Kenneth and Dorothy Kirkpatrick; brother, Keith Kirkpatrick; and sister, Mary Thiele.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, November 30, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel.
