Obituary
______
Israel Howard, who died at the home of his son, T. S. Howard, corner Euclid avenue and Fifth street on Sunday, February 3, 1901 at 11:30 p. m, in his eighty-seventh year, was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, January 8, 1815. At the age of 8 years he moved with his parents to Marion county, Indiana, where he grew to manhood. In 1839 he was united in marriage to Eliza Tansel. From this union eight children were born, five of whom grew to mature years, Julia, Hardin, Minerva, Mary and Nancy. In 1855 he was married to Catharine S. Dwier, who survives him. From this union six children were born, five of whom reached mature years-Eliza, Thomas, John, Sigel and Lydia. Of the children, Hardin, Mary, Thomas, John, Sigel and Lydia are still living.

Mr. Howard was a member of the Baptist church, but moving to a community where there was no church of of that denomination he has not been for years directly connected with church life, but his has been a consistent Christian pilgrimage through all his years. He moved to Iowa in 1868 and has been a resident of Polk county ever since.

For the last few months he has been a helpless invalid, thus compelled to leave his home on the farm and live with some member of his family, but in it all he has been a most patient man. For many weeks before his death he expressed himself as ready to go to his long home, and was strong in his hope of a life of blessedness in the world to come. On Saturday at 1 o'clock he became unconscious, and never regained consciousness, but slept away his life, thus passing quietly from earth to heaven. He was a man highly respected by all his acquaintances. He had not an enemy on earth. Always an upright honest, God-fearing, Christian man, he was a good citizen, a splendid moral character, and the world was better because Israel Howard lived in it.
