THE FUNERAL OF MRS. GIVEN

_________
The Last Sad Rites Over the Remains of a Grand Good Woman
Mrs. Elizabeth A. Given, the wife of Judge Josiah Given, chief justice of the
Supreme Court of Iowa, died at her home, 1427 Locust street Friday night, just before
11 o'clock. Mrs. Given, who has lived in Des Moines nearly thirty years, had a wonderfully wide acquaintance, and her
death will be read of in hundreds of families this week with moist eyes and sad hearts. She was a woman of uncommon
personality, a woman to whom everyone could look as a model of everything that was good, sweet and loveable.
Her sickness was not commonly known of in the city and the suddenness of her death makes it all the more severe.

Mrs. Given was born in Millersburg, O., on May 29, 1833. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Armor. On October 6, 1851, she
married Josiah Given. On the first of May, 1868. they came to Des Moines and have ever since lived in this city, one of
the best known, highly respected and loved couples here. She had six sons and one daughter, all of whom are living;
Welker, who is the editor of the Times-Republican at Marshalltown: Frank L., who lives at Napa, Idaho; Tom S., who
lives in St. Paul: Cud, who lives in New York; John A., of Des Moines; William H., the first assistant superintendent of the
Chicago Rock Island & Pacific, living in Des Moines, and Mattie, living at the home here. Of Mrs. Given's immediate
family but one survives; a brother, Thomas Armor, who lives in Millersburg, O., the old Armor home.

The funeral of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Given, wife of the chief justice of the state Supreme Court, was held at the
house, 1427 Locust street, Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, and was largely attended. Many of these present had just come
from attendance at the services at the obsequies of Judge George G. Wright, which began an hour earlier, the time
having been arranged for the purpose of accommodating the friends of both of the deceased. Rev. Dr. Marshall, of the
Central Presbyterian church, officiated at the funeral of Mrs. Given, assisted by Rev. Drs. Frisble and Tilden.

The pew heretofore occupied by Mrs. Given at the Central Presbyterian church was beautifully draped with flowers and
evergreens, Sunday morning, by the ladies of the church as a tribute of love for their departed sister and friend, whose
sweet presence the gently fragrant flowers served to recall.
