Richard (Dick) T. Howard, Jr., 85, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2011 in Davenport, FL following a battle with cancer and Parkinson's disease.
Dick was born in Des Moines, IA on March 5, 1926. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in June of 1944, he joined the U.S. Army where he served in Europe during WWII. He earned a European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Good Conduct Medal, and Bronze Star. He returned to Des Moines to attend Drake University.
Dick's career as an Electrical/Mechanical Engineer included work on hospitals and State and Federal buildings. He was a member, and for a time, president of ASHRAE. After moving to Orlando, FL, Dick continued his career in engineering, retiring in 1990. One of his proudest accomplishments was working at Disney as a consultant.
Dick was proud of serving his country and enjoyed sharing stories with family and friends. As a WWII Veteran, he was honored to attend the Volusia County, FL "Honor Air" flight to Washington, DC in 2009.
Dick is survived by his wife of 24 years, Patricia Howard; three daughters, Jacquin Irene Howard-Bodensteiner (IA), Barbara Sue Howard (NE), Brooke Elizabeth Howard (IA); and 1 son, Richard William Howard (IA); four step-children, Michael Coon (IA), Debra Hines (IA), Jean Harrier (IA) and Leslie Garrison (IA). He is survived by 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Dick is preceded in death by his parents, sister, and two grandchildren.
