Albert "Al" C. Nichols, 89, a life time resident of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2010.
Al graduated from East High in 1939 and attended Grand View and Drake. He joined the Army Air Foce in 1942, became a lead B-17 pilot, and attained the rank of Captain in the 8th Air Force 452nd Bomb Group where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross twice and the Air Medal six times.
After the war he entered into home, apartment, and commercial building, also rental and land development which he continued until retirement.
Al is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara (Van Dama) Nichols; his son, Steve (Gayle) Nichols; his sister, Mildred (Joe) David; his brother, Howard (Judy) Nichols; son-in-law, Stan Lieber; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patty Lieber; his sisters, Marjorie (Lawrence) Mally, Gertrude (Charles) Crook, Barbara (Glen) Forsythe and Nancy Nichols.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 13, 2010 at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn's Chapel. His family will receive friends immediately following the service. Cremation rites will be accorded with private burial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Scottish Rite Good Life Fund, 2909 Woodland Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50312.
