Melvin Earl "Mel" Johnson, 79, passed from this life on Friday, January 8, 2010 at his home in Madrid. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 13, at Iles Funeral Homes, Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Chapel in Madrid. Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, south of Madrid.
Mel was born the son of Harvey Earl and Elsie Mae (Henderson) Johnson on May 5, 1930 in Perry, Iowa. He married Phyllis Howard on May 6, 1955 in Madrid, where they made their home. Mel was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the United States Air Force for four years. He farmed for several years and was employed with Armstrong Tire for 33 years, until Mel retired in 1987. He was an avid Madrid Tigers Football fan, a member of the Woodward Golf Course and ABC Bowling Association, and a lifetime member of the Madrid V.F.W. Post 5060.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Phyllis Johnson of Madrid; sister, Carolyn Ross of Des Moines; two brothers-in-law, Bob (Ruth) Howard of Madrid and Kenneth (Lois) Howard of Las Vegas, NV; sister-in-law, Maxine Burton of Madrid; 16 nieces and nephews; and a host of many great-nieces and great-nephews. Mel was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister-in-law, Margene Shearer of Perry.
In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made to the: Mel Johnson Memorial Fund.
Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12, at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
