Margarete Alberta Slocum daughter of Nelson E. Slocum and Sarah Jane Smith Slocum, was born August 19, 1874, on a farm six miles southeast of Humeston, and departed this life in Des Moines May 7, 1948 at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 11 days.
She had one brother Earl, and three sisters Leona, Della and Lula, all of whom have preceded her in death with the exception of one sister, Della, who lives south of Humeston.
She became a member of the Methodist church in young womanhood, and was active in church work the remainder of her life. She was church organist for many years.
In 1894 she married Charles C. Blackman. To this union five sons were born: Clarence E., Clifford G., Earl who died in infancy, Harold E. and Ray D.
She moved with her sons to Des Moines early in 1913, where she spent the remainder of her life. In 1922 she was united in marriage to John R. Burris.
Surviving relatives are: Her husband, John R. Burris, one sister, Della Robinson of Humeston, four sons: Clarence of Humeston, Harold of Chariton, Clifford and Ray, of Des Moines. There are seven living grandchildren: Dean Blackman, of Des Moines, Betty McCullough, of Humeston, and Charles, Glen, Gene, Rae Mary, and Helene Blackman all of Des Moines, and David Blackman of Chariton. She leaves one living cousin: Ethel Coffey of Humeston; and one great grandchild, Patty Anne Blackman, of Des Moines. Besides these there are several nieces and nephews, and a whole circle of friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church with Rev. M.C. Shupe officiating. The funeral was conducted by Mr. Harry Shane, Harbach Funeral Home, Des Moines, Mr. Art Lewis, Albia, Mr. Wayne Hutchinson, Humeston and the personel of the Beardsley Funeral Home, Chariton. The body lay in state at Harbach Funeral Home in Des Moines Friday and Saturday and at the Humeston Methodist church between 1 and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Piano selections were furnished by Mrs. Cecil Gibbs.
Interment was made in the Humeston Cemetery.
Pall bearers were: G.M. Thomas, Charles Humeston, Robert Linton, Frank Gibbs, Carl Reed, Shelby Reed.
Attending the services from out of town were; Mr. and Mrs. Creed Cravens, and Mrs. Rosa Bryan of Lineville; Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. John Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Birdsall, Mrs. Peck, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Davis, Mrs. Harry Shane of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. N. Cummings of Minneapolis, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Roland Reed, Mr. and Mrs. D. Breckenridge, Mrs. Ella Tabor of Newton; Mr. and Mrs. Reed Merrick, Joe and Tommy of Maryville, Missouri; Mr. and Mrs. James Frame of Confidence; Mr. and Mrs. C.Comegys, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Wagner and Elvin Wagner of Garden Grove, other relatives and friends.
