Ila Janette Phelps, age 96, of Bickford Cottage in Ames passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2007. Services will be held 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2008, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines.

Ila Janette Phelps was born March 31, 1911, in Churdan, Iowa, to James R. and Addie (Post) Towers, the youngest of ten children. She graduated from Johnston High School in 1928 and married Russell L. Phelps in Des Moines on April 12, 1929. Ila assisted Russell in their farm operation in the Ankeny area until the mid-fifties when she started a career as an optometric assistant. Ila retired from this work in the mid-seventies. She was a member of United Church of Christ in Ankeny.

Ila is survived by one son, Larry (Donita) Phelps of Grundy Center; one daughter, Sharon Twedt of Huxley; six grandchildren, Terri, Randy, Lori, Rhonda, Daniel and Brian; fifteen great grandchildren; and eleven great-great- grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Russell; one infant son, Donald Carroll; all of her siblings, six brothers, Archie, Milton, Earl, Dean, Tom and Glenn, and three sisters, Irma, Olive and Jean; and her son-in-law, Robert Twedt.

Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given to the Rolling Green Village in Nevada. Arrangements have been entrusted to Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater.
