DAISY ELIZABETH

EDGERLY SIRES

West Des Moines

Daisy Elizabeth Edgerly Sires passed away April 1, 2009 at Fountain West Health Center, West Des Moines, Iowa. She was born of a pioneer family on July 9, 1910 in Central City, Iowa.

After graduating from Central City High School, she taught in rural one-room schools. She married Raymond Sires, her high school sweetheart, in 1931 and continued to teach until he graduated from college. Daisy postponed her dreams of a college degree to raise a family and to work for the Buck Creek Consolidated School District.

In 1941 she and Raymond started the Tama Hatchery Feed and Farm Store in Tama and operated it until they retired in 1977. Following a move to Marshalltown, Daisy taught there for a while and then for ten years was Campus Librarian at the State Juvenile Home in Toledo. In 1976, at age 66, she realized a life long dream by obtaining a degree in Library Science from UNI.

Daisy’s husband Raymond Sires and daughter Marjorie Kurdle predeceased her. Son, Douglas Sires and wife, Deborah, Polk City; daughter, Marilyn Baker and husband William, St Augustine, Florida; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren lovingly remember her.

Daisy loved entertaining her family, reading, traveling and discussing politics.

Hamilton's on Westown Parkway is in charge of funeral arrangements. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Hamilton's on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, with interment at Garden of Memories in Waterloo. Memorials can be made to the Activities Fund at Fountain West Health Center or a charity of your choice.
