George A. Henderson, 83, died Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Mercy Hospital.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Merle Hay Funeral Home with entombment at Merle Hay Mausoleum. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

George was born August 29, 1925 to Lewis and Ominia Henderson in Des Moines and was one of six children. George married Shirley Merten in 1946 and eight children were born to this union. He was employed as a painter at Henderson Painting Inc. and worked into his 70's, never really learning how to retire.

George will be remembered for his strong work ethic. He enjoyed helping others, gardening, fishing, wood working, and spending time with his family. George was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His smile and great sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Bobby and Richard Henderson; and one sister, Diela Hartman.

George is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Shirley; eight children: Carroll (Mary) Henderson, Rita (Donn) Scott, Wannette Gale, Sherry (Mike) Atkinson, Terry (Nancy) Henderson, Jamie (Dot) Henderson, Heidi (John) Hagen, and Robin Henderson; thirty grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren; sister, Lillian Beener; brother, Mort (Dixie) Henderson; and many friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the American Heart Association.
