Observed 90th Birthday Anniversary
============================
Mrs. Lulu Fry, known to many as "Grandma Fry," observed her 90th birthday on Sindey, July 2, at her home in Grimes. Mrs. Fry spent the day quietly with a neighbor or two, and friends calling to extend congratulations. Darline Woodring brought a delicious birthday dinner all prepared, complete with a birthday cake, so Mrs. Fry didn't have to cook her own dinner on this memorable day.

Mrs. Fry was born July 2, 1871 on a farm three miles south and one quarter mile west of Grimes. Her parents were Sidney and Lucina Campbell. In 1895 she became the bride of Wesley Warren Fry. The couple enjoyed 43 years of married life before he passed away October 19, 1938.

Her only sons Sidney and Acahel, now deceased, were veterans of World War One and were both overseas when the Armistice was signed.

Mrs. Fry has lived in Grimes 61 years except for approximately four years that she lived in Des Moines during which time Mr. Fry was employed at the Startch Works, the Bridge and Iron Works and two years spent in Florida where he was engaged in carpenter work.

Her father, the late Sidney Campbell, gave his daughter the lot where her home is after her marriage. Mr. Fry with her help, whenever she could, built their home on this lot where they spent most of their married life. This is still where Mrs. Fry lives doing for herself, cooking her meals and even doing her own sewing, although Mrs. Fry states she has not been doing quite so much sewing herself lately. Here we quote in Mrs. Fry's own words -- "I sit here, read, write and sew, thread my needle without glasses."

Another marvel for someone celebrating their 90th birthday, is that she still has a license to drive her own automobile. She makes tripos to the Post Office and stopping to call on friends. Mrs. Fry says her auto also takes her to get groceries, as well as the cemetery where she finds the graves of her husband, and her sons whenever she can and feels like making the short trip.

Mrs. Fry has been a member of the Rebekah Lodge for 60 years. She first joined here in Grimes but in later years has been a member of the Golden Star Lodge in Des Moines. She is also a member of the Grimes Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary. The local Auxiliary unit honored Mrs. Fry at their meeting on July 3, and presented her with an electric toaster and birthday cake.

Saturday evening, July 1, Mrs. Fry was invited to the home of Rev. and Mrs. LeRoy A. Clark and children, for a birthday dinner with a lovely cake and the Happy Birthday Song. Her neighbors, Marie and Jim, Hutcheson gave her a box of assorted canned and frozen foods.

All the courtesies in her honor, the numerous other gifts, and the birthday cards which she received, numbering more than 50, all made this 90th birthday a happy one for "Grandma Fry."

This is a poem which Mrs. Fry remembers her mother reciting to her when she was a very little girl and through the years these words have often been brought top her mind. She is passing it on for others to read and maybe your child will find enjoyment from it as she did.

So now in your play be very careful

Not to give another pain,

And if others hurt or tease you,

Never do the like or same.

For God will love, the child that is gentle.

And who tries to do no wrong --

So you must learn to be vary careful

Now while you are young and strong.
