Bellevue Leader, July 4, 1883, reprinted in the Jackson Sentinel, July 12, 1883
Ed Holmes, former Clerk of the Supreme Court, and one of Jackson County’s favorite sons, is now in a critical condition at Des Moines. He is literally starving to death because his stomach refused to digest food. He is often in the most excruciating pain and is losing three-quarters of a pound of flesh daily. He cannot take medicine, neither can he take any kind of food that will likely sour in his stomach. His physician says that his terrible disease was brought about by too close attention to business and lack of physical exercise.
