A Pioneer Educator passes Away.
J. C. Gilchrist, one of the pioneer educators of Iowa, died at his home near Laurens, Pocahontas county, last Thursday. The cause of death was Bright’s disease. When the State Normal School at Cedar Falls was established, he was elected its first president, and served in that capacity for upwards of ten years. From there he went to Algona and started the Upper Iowa Normal. Still later he was elected president of the Northwestern University at Sioux City, from which he retired on account of failing health. He was an active Methodist all his life.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born May 20, 1831 and died Aug. 12, 1897. He is buried in Laurens Cemetery.
