John D. Whitman

John D. Whitman, 80, Matney Westside Manor, died Tuesday, March 28, 1989, in the nursing home after a short illness.

There will be no services. The body was cremated and the ashes will be buried in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. Christy Morningside Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Whitman was born Feb. 3, 1909, in Laurens, Iowa. He married Shirley V. Thatcher Oct. 10, 1931, in Dakota City. The couple lived in Albert City, Iowa, until moving to Sioux City in 1943. She died in August 1977 in Sioux City. He owned and operated Jay Dee's Recreation in Canton, S.D., for six years and worked as a machinist at Wincharger Corp. in Sioux City from 1943 until his retirement.

Survivors include a daughter, Dono K. Kern of Westfield, Iowa; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
