Funeral Services Held for A. A. Allen of Laurens

Funeral services for A. A. Allen, who died at his home north of Laurens on Monday, August 19, were held Wednesday afternoon at his home. The Rev. Ernest Hoon of Hartley and the Rev. H. O Ward of the Methodist church officiated at the services. Mrs. Ernest Peterson and Mrs. Lyle George sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere.” The pallbearers were Earl Cone, Albert White, Julius Phillips and Bert Johnson. The McKee Funeral Home had charge of the services and interment was in the Marathon cemetery.

Alfred Alton Allen was born on Nov. 3, 1864 to Jonathon and Mary Allen at Norwalk, Iowa, and passed away on Monday, August 19, 1940. On June 26, 1887, he married Mahala Myers of Spring Hill and eleven children were born to this union. A daughter, Hazel, died in infancy.

In 1906, the family moved to a farm near Marathon. Three years later they moved to a farm near Laurens where Mr. Allen spent the rest of his life.

Mr. Allen was a true friend and neighbor. He is survived by his wife, six sons and 4 daughters, 41 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. The sons are Alvie of West Bend; Charles, Ruthven; Howard and Noah, Ayrshire; and Harold of Laurens. The daughters are Mrs. Ralph Murray, Everly; Mrs. Roy Bishop, Franklin, Minn.; Mrs. Ole Cleveland, Linn Grove; and Mrs. George Carroll, Laurens. There is also a nephew, Oral Headrick of Curlew, who made his home with the Allen’s and a sister, Mrs. Walter Dietz of Des Moines. A large number of friends and relatives out-of town attended the funeral.
