June 10, 1926 - Rolfe Arrow - James A. Carroll, a pioneer resident of Pocahontas county and for years an honored citizen of Rolfe, passed away at his home in this city Monday night, June 7, 1926, after an illness extending over several months. The immediate cause of his death was paralysis, he having been stricken ten days or so before passing away.

James A. Carroll was born at Macon, Georgia, Feb. 7, 1853, and was therefore slightly more than seventy-three years of age at the time he was called. He came as a youth with his parents to LaMotte, Iowa, and on Mar. 4, 1871, was united in marriage to Anna Dailey at St. Theresa, Jackson county, Iowa. Mrs. Carroll preceeded him in death Jan. 8, 1923.

In November, 1883, they moved to Fonda. To this union were born nine children, two of them, Anna and Frank, preceeding their parents in death. The living children are: Z.T. Carroll of Rolfe, Iowa; P.H. Carroll of California; Mrs. Emma Linnan of Fonda, Iowa; James M. Carroll of Pasadena, Calif.; Emmett J . Carroll of Chicago, Illinois; Mrs. Nellie McCreery of Fonda, Iowa; and Mrs Jennie Nacke of Rolfe, Iowa. The last named has made a home for her father since the death of Mrs. Carroll and has tenderly cared for him in his failing health and declining years. There are also left to mourn the departure of the grandfather twenty-six grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.

The Carroll family came to Rolfe in 1890, and for some time Mr. Carroll was employed as a clerk in M. Crahan's store, one of the largest mercantile establishments in the county. He was a genial clerk and very good salesman, rapidly gaining friends and the confidence of his new neighbors. Later Mr. Carroll engaged in the real estate and insurance business and continued the same until his health began to break, when he retired. He made a success of this business, being connected with the transfer of a great many acres of land in this and ajoining counties. At times he owned a considerable quantity of farm land and town property.

He served his community in an official capacity many times and was faithful to every trust. He was mayor of Rolfe several years, and also served on the school board. He was conscientious in the performance of every public duty. Religiously, he was a Catholic and a member of St. Margaret's congregation of Rolfe. He was faithful in his attendance, liberal in his support of the church, and unwavering in his faith. But his Christianity was broad and included neighborliness and friendship for all mankind. He was a true Christian gentleman in every sense of the word.

Mr. Carroll was one of the writer's dearest friends over a long period of time, and we always felt we could go to him with any of our problems and secure fatherly advice. He was a real man in every way; a devoted husband and father, a liberal provider and always an asset to the community in which he lived.

Owing to the fact St. Margaret's church at Rolfe is undergoing reconstruction, funeral services were held at Our Lady of Good Counsel church at Fonda, the former home, with Rev. Geo. T. Theobald of Rolfe officiating, assisted by Father Murtagh of Emmetsburg, a former pastor at Rolfe. The funeral party left Rolfe at eight o'clock this Thursday morning. Interment was made in Mt. Zion cemetery at Fonda, where the body of Mrs. Carroll was laid to rest.
