Mrs. L.N. Ellis Dies at the Home of Her daughter

Mrs. L. N. Ellis died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Viola Jones in Minneapolis, Saturday, March 12th. The remains were brought to Laurens Monday morning, that they might be laid beside those of her husband. Members of the American Legion acted as pall bearers.

Martha Ann Crary was born in Dixon, Ogle county, Illinois, July 6, 1840; On the 25th of December, 1860 she was united in marriage to Lewis N. Ellis at Monroe, Wisconsin. To this union were born nine children: four daughters and five sons. In 1877 the Ellises moved from Illinois to Iowa and settled at Newell. In 1884 the family moved to Laurens where they remained until the death of both Mr. and Mrs. Ellis. They were residents of Laurens nearly fifty years.

Mr. Ellis was a veteran of the Civil War. He passed away in 1926 and since then Mrs. Ellis made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Frank Martin, of Laurens. Mrs. Ellis passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Viola Jones, in Minneapolis, Minnesota Saturday, March 12, 1932, at the advanced age of ninety-one years, eight months, and six days. Those of her family and family connections that remain and mourn her passing are Mrs. Pearl Mather and Mrs. Geneva Martin, both of Laurens, Iowa; Mrs. Viola Jones, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Henry Ellis, of Carlyle, Iowa; and Herbert Ellis, of Des Moines, Iowa; forty-five grand children, and about eighty great-grand children, and twenty great-great- grandchildren.

One of Mrs. Ellis' children, a boy,: died in infancy, a daughter, Mrs. Rachel Hopkins died thirty-three years ago, a son Frank passed away seven years ago, and another son Albert died four years ago.

Mrs. Ellis never united with any church. Her daughters, however,. bear testimony that their mother was an earnest reader of the Bible, that as a mark of her faith in Christ she had received the sacrament of baptism. A long-time neighbor and friend spoke of her as a good neighbor, and a woman whom no one ever spoke against. Mrs. Ellis' has finished her long life journey, her race is run, and as one who read her Bible and trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ, her relatives and friends may be comforted in the belief that she has received "the crown of life which the Lord has promised to them who love him,"

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon in charge of the pastor, Rev. Chas. H. Seward. Interment was in the Laurens cemetery.

The following relatives were here to attend the funeral: Mrs. Viola Jones of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert C. Ellis and daughter Verna of Des Moines; Henry L. Ellis and two daughters, Minnie and Hazel of Carlisle; Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Shook and Mr. and Mrs. R. Galbraith and daughter Naomi of Newell; Mr. and Mrs. Jess Ellis and two daughters, Marie and Emma of Emmetsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Belden and daughter Lucille of Marathon, Mrs. Ned Wells of Albert City and Harrison
Ellis of Sac City.
