Waldo Sporleder, 89, Fonda, died July 4, 2003 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, Storm Lake. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Lampe Funeral Home, Lake City, is handling arrangements. Waldo Sporleder was born June 17, 1914 in rural Carroll County, Iowa to Henry Carl and Wilhelmina (Boell) Sporleder. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith. In 1921, the family moved to a farm near Lake City. He was confirmed with the first confirmation class of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church that was founded in 1928. After graduation from Lake City High School, he farmed with his parents and later his brother Ernest. During World War II, he entered the United States Army and was trained as a radio operator. He was assigned to the 90th Division that participated in the invasion of Europe through France and Germany. The 90th Division was a member of the Third Army commanded by General George Patton. Waldo landed with the 90th Division at Normandy on D-Day plus one in June 1944. In December 1944, Waldo endured the Battle of the Bulge. During his military service he received the Purple Heart for a wound he received in combat. After the war, Waldo farmed with his brother Ernest at Fonda. Later, he worked as an automobile mechanic with Emmett Chevrolet in Fonda. In recent years he lived at the Fonda Care Center in Fonda. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister Cora, brothers Albert and Carl and sisters Clara Heuton, Emma Thede, and Laura Thede. Survivors include one brother Ernest of Lake City.
