Obituaries--Mary Hodgson

Mary Hodgson, 92, of LeMars, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at Friendship Haven Nursing Home in Fort Dodge.

The former Mary Juanita McKinley was born July 20, 1907, to Walter C. and Maude (Foster) McKinley near Russell in Lucas County, Iowa.

Being a child of the parsonage, she also lived in Mt. Ayr, Hubbard, Colo., and Merrill, where her father was pastor of the Merrill Stanton Evangelical Church and Belle Plain, all in Iowa. She graduated from Russell High School in 1925. Mary attended Western Union College in LeMars for two years and taught one year at the Neptune school.

On Aug. 18, 1928, she married Robert C. Hodgson at Cedar Falls. He preceded her in death on Feb. 20, 1993, at the age of 91. They resided on a farm in Stanton Township until 1963 when they retired and moved to LeMars. They joined Calvary United Methodist Church at that time.

After retiring from the farm, Mary worked as a switchboard operator at Westmar College for 17 years. She was active in various organizations including Church Women United, Farm Bureau Women on the county, district, and state levels; Federated Woman's Club; American Cancer Society, Calvary United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

In 1976, she received the Service with a Heart award presented by the LeMars Area Chamber of Commerce.

Mary and her husband spent 12 years wintering in Pharr, Texas and they also owned a cabin in Pine River, Minn., where they spent many weeks in the summers. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at Grand Forks, N.D. in 1988.

Survivors include two sons, Clayton and Ardella Hodgson of LeMars and R. James of Manitowoc, Wis.; one daughter and son-in-law, Marianne and Jim Carlson of Pine River, Minn.; a sister, Rachel Schultz of Council Bluffs; a brother, the Rev. Paul and Leola McKinley of Fort Dodge; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two young brothers, a sister, Alda Ruth Schuler, and two brothers-in-law, Dean Schuler and Richard Schultz.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Calvary United Methodist Church in LeMars with the Rev. Josue Florendo officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Lee Hodgson of Louisville, Ky.; Beth Schuetz (sic-Schultz) of Remsen, Linn Hodgson, of Grand Forks, N. D., Roberta Blake of Pequot Lakes, Minn., Jill Boeyink of Willmar Minn., Charles Carlson of Brainerd, Minn. and Douglas Hodgson of Urbandale.
