Mr. Nick Hentges Called By Death

Pioneer Settler Passes Away At The Age of 81 - Funeral on Wednesday

Nicholas Hentges, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Le Mars, peacefully passed away to his eternal reward Wednesday at 1:30 surrounded by the members of his family who had been summoned home to be with him during his last illness.

Mr. Hentges has been confined to is home the past six years, having suffered a paralytic stroke from which he had not fully recovered at the time of his death.

He was born December 6, 1844, in Bissen Grand Duchy de Luemburg where he spent his boyhood and received his early education. At the age of nineteen, he emigrated to America making Chicago his home for a short time, later coming to Caledonia, Minnesota, then west to Iowa. In 1870 he located in Plymouth county at the same time homesteading in Sioux county. He engaged in the contracting business which trade he followed up to the time of his early illness,

Nicholas Hentges was a highly respected citizen, widely known throughout the county and neighboring towns. His death will be deeply regretted by a large circle of friends and neighbors. By his uprightness of character, sterling integrity and other qualifications he earned the respect of all those with whom he was in any way associated. He was a lover of the great outdoors and much of his leisure time was spent in hunting and trapping.

He was united in marriage with Miss Anna Wagner November 4, 1879, at Le Mars by Rev. H. J. Meis, having resided here ever since. To their union eleven children were born who are: Clem, of Crown Point, Indiana; Dan, of Lake Forest, Ill.; William, of Santa Ana, California; Emma, of Hibbing, Minn.; John, Leo, Helen, Cleo and Regina of Le Mars. Two children died in infancy.

He was a faithful and active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic church, being one of the original pioneers who was instrumental through sacrifice, faithfulness and perseverance in making possible the splendid house of worship.

The funeral services will be held on Saturday at ten o’clock at St. Joseph’s church.
