Jeanette (Poeckes) Harpenau died peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, in her home in Le Mars.
Jeanette Mary (Poeckes) Harpenau was born Oct. 1, 1936, in Le Mars, the daughter of Eugene and Myra (Pick) Poeckes. She graduated from Remsen St. Mary's in 1954. Jeanette married Robert Harpenau on Oct. 8, 1957, in Remsen.She enjoyed a lifelong love for cooking, family, friends and playing cards.
Jeanette was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, the Catholic Order of Foresters Lady and Men Foresters and several card clubs.
Jeanette was a loving mother to all seven of her children. In her later years she babysat many children, including nieces and nephews. She was an avid card player at the Senior Citizens Center. She also enjoyed the competition of playing checkers. She was a hard worker who always gave of herself and never expected anything in return. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Robert; three daughters, Connie and husband Mark Seible of Merrill, Laurie and husband Darren Lint of McAllen, Texas, and Julie and husband Mike Pottebaum of Alton; four sons, Jack and wife Donna of Waterloo, Ind., Doug and wife Judy, and Frank, all of LaCrescent, Minn., Rodney and wife Michelle of Smithville, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; six brothers, Art and wife Peg Poeckes of Le Mars, twin brother Eugene Poeckes of Merrill, Mark and Pam, Paul and Sharon, Dennis and Kathy and Roger, all of Remsen.
Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Geraldine Hilton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Sunday at the church, with a 4 p.m. Parish Rosary, a 7 p.m. Scriptural Service and an 8:30 p.m. Catholic Order of the Foresters rosary.
Arrangements are with the Carlsen Funeral Home of Le Mars.
Casket bearers are: Brad Poeckes, Dustin Poeckes, Brian Poeckes, Brian Harpenau, Monty Harpenau and Bart Galles.
Honorary casket bearers are her grandchildren: Jonathan, Nicole, Jennifer, Ashley, Ryan, Courtney, Christopher, Tiffany, Alex, Stephanie, Ben, Steven, Jefferson, Kennedie and Abigail
