Dr. Leonard A. Brooks, 82, of Brunsville, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Sioux City.

Dr. Brooks was born Jan. 14, 1921, in Baltimore, Md., the son of Percy and Virginia (Smith) Brooks. He played semi-pro football and baseball prior to entering the United States Army Air Corps on Dec. 8, 1941. He served as a radio operator instructor in Sioux Falls, S.D., from 1943-44, and with the Headquarters Squadron 7th Fighter Command on Iwo Jima in 1945.

On March 19, 1945, he married Doris Dickman of Brunsville. They moved to Maryland following World War II, where he graduated from Columbia College of Chiropractic. The family moved to Iowa and he continued his education at Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport.

Dr. Brooks opened his office in Akron in 1953 and practiced there for 50 years, until the time of his death.

He was active in the Sioux City Gospel Mission and a member of Le Mars Bible Church, the American Legion and the V.F.W. In his free time, he loved singing gospel music, fishing, woodworking and flying.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Brooks of Brunsville; three sons and their wives, Len and Lisa Brooks of Iowa City, Mark and Susan Brooks of Waynesboro, Va., and Bradley and Jamie Brooks of Huntsville, Utah; three daughters and their husbands, Cathy Dale Halverson of Waterloo, Sharon and Barry Drotleff of Dunnsville, Va., and Cynthia and Frank Biaggi of Santa Rosa, Calif.; 16 grandchildren, Chad, Jessica, Natalie, Stephanie, Chris and his wife, Gina, Ben, Clarie, Grace, Daniel, Samuel, Austin, Christian, Andrew, Samantha, Keeley and Ian; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Le Mars Bible Church in Le Mars with Pastor Fred Gums and Pastor Ken Koth officiating. Burial will be in St. Peters Lutheran Cemetery at Brunsville. Visitation in Le Mars will be today (Wednesday) from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Le Mars Bible Church, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation was held at Akron Tuesday, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Schroeder Funeral Home, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. The Schroeder Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Len Brooks, Mark Brooks M.D., Barry Drotleff, Dale Halverson, Bradley Brooks and Frank Biaggi. Honorary pallbearers will be Lisa Brooks, Susan Brooks, Sharon Drotleff, Cathy Halverson, Jamie Brooks and Cynthia Biaggi.

A memorial has been established at the Sioux City Gospel Mission.
