FATAL AUTO ACCIDENT
John Wagner, Residing Near LeMars, Succumbs to Injuries.
LeMars, Ia., Aug. 17, 1914—Special: John Wagner, aged 33, died yesterday from the effects of an automobile accident on Saturday, with his employer, John Roeder, a farmer near Remsen, and Peter Boever, a neighbor. They were coming to LeMars and when near Remsen they struck a dog in the road. Roeder, who was driving, escaped unhurt. Boever had his head cut and three ribs broken. Wagner suffered internal injuries from which he died in great agony last night. He was a native of Luxembourg, Europe, and had worked on farms here for the last ten years. The local lodge of Eagles took charge of the remains, as he has no relatives here. A wheel came off the car when the driver tried to dodge the dog and the car was turned upside down.

John Wagner is Victim of Automobile Accident, Dying From Effects of Severe Internal Injuries—Suffered Great Agony From Hurts.

John Wagner, who has made his home in LeMars for a number of years, died in great agony at an hotel in Remsen on Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock from the effects of injuries received in an automobile accident. Wagner was badly hurt internally. Of late Wagner had been working for a farmer named John Roeder, north of Remsen. They had been assisting in threshing operations at the Boever farm in that locality and finished up the job in the middle of Saturday afternoon. John Roeder, Peter Boever and John Wagner started for LeMars in the Roeder automobile. At about five o’clock, passing the Strohbeen farm three miles north of Remsen, a big dog dashed out at the machine and grabbed one of the tires. In avoiding running over the dog the driver turned the car sharply, and it was ditched, one wheel being torn off by the quick turn. The car turned upside down. Boever was pinned under the car and had several ribs broken and his head cut. He will recover. Wagner and Roeder were thrown clear of the machine. Roeder escaped with a few scratches. Wagner was cut on the head and injured internally.

His condition was seen to be serious and he complained of great pain in the abdominal region.

Physicians from Remsen attended him, and on Sunday members of the Eagle lodge, of this city, of which Wagner was a member, took the lodge physician, Dr. Wild, down to see the injured man. He was suffering intensely throughout the day and night but did not lose consciousness, and recognized those around him. He was conscious until four minutes before he passed away, when he threw up his arms with a gasp of agony and gave up the struggle.

Wagner was a man about thirty-two or thirty-three years of age, and had lived in and around LeMars for several years. He was employed as hostler at the Grand Central hotel when August Nuel was proprietor, for a considerable length of time, and since leaving there had worked on farms in this vicinity. He was a native of Luxembourg, Europe, and as far as known here has only one brother in America. He is Nicholas Wagner, who lives at Bird Island, Minn. He wrote he could not come to attend the funeral.

The LeMars lodge of Eagles took charge of the remains and will give the unfortunate man Christian burial, and wind up his mundane affairs.

The funeral will be held this morning at ten o’clock at St. Joseph’s church in this city.

John Wagner was born thirty-four years ago at Nussburg, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Europe. His aged mother still lives in the old home village.
