Herman A. Heeren, 97, of Le Mars, died early Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Herman Albert Heeren was born April 14, 1907, on the family farm in Johnson Township, rural Plymouth County, the son of John and Edith (Harms) Heeren. Herman was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Johnson Township. He attended country school in Johnson Township. Following his education, Herman began farming with his father on the family farm.

Herman was united in marriage to Clara Borchers on March 4, 1936, at St. John Lutheran Church in Preston Township, rural Akron. The couple farmed in Johnson Township for more than 40 years before retiring and moving to Le Mars in 1973. Clara died Dec. 9, 1973.

Herman was later united in marriage to Loris (Gronemeyer) Gabel on June 4, 1977, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig. Herman and Loris continued to make their home in Le Mars.

Herman enjoyed going to dances, music, and watching his favorite baseball team, the Chicago Cubs. He was very well read; often enjoying reading the entire newspaper. Herman enjoyed traveling by car, having toured most of the United States and the southern provinces of Canada. He was a longtime member of the Plymouth County Farm Bureau. Attending weekly church worship services was very important to Herman. The last several years Herman and Loris were members of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Loris of Le Mars; a daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Duane Winterfeld of Sioux Center; a grandson and his wife, Randy and Mindy Winterfeld of Hull; two great-grandchildren, Mitchell and Ashten Winterfeld; three stepchildren and spouses, Gene and Sandra Gabel of Sioux Falls, S.D., Wanda and Wendell Oltmanns of Le Mars, and Debbie and Bob Gibson of Jonesboro, Ark; five step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Edith (Harms) Heeren; his first wife, Clara Borchers; a brother, Louis Heeren; and a sister, Louise Rann.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Le Mars with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating.

Burial was in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Le Mars. Visitation was after 3 p.m. Sunday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family was present to greet friends after 5:30 p.m. Sunday with a prayer service at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers were Randy Winterfeld, Merrill McNaughton, LeRoy Borchers, Ronald Borchers, Jerry Rann, and Melvin Heeren.
