Richard Hawkins, 87, of Le Mars, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Richard H. Hawkins was born Dec. 13, 1917, in Le Mars, the son of Albert and Annie (Zimmerman) Hawkins. Richard was baptized and confirmed at the Seney United Methodist Church. He grew up on the family farm in Elgin Township and also attended country school. Richard was united in marriage to Jean M. Vanden Berge on Aug. 13, 1941, at the Reformed Church in Carnes. Richard and Jean lived on the Hawkins farm northeast of Seney in Elgin Township until they moved to Le Mars in 1980.

Richard was a lifelong member of the Seney United Methodist Church where he had served as an active trustee for many years. In the early 1950s, Richard assisted with raising the church and installing a basement. He was a lifelong John Deere enthusiast, having restored several tractors with his brother, David Hawkins, and good friend, Aaron Denniston, all working together as a team. He also was a 50-year member of the Plymouth County Farm Bureau.

Richard and Jean moved to Park Place Estates in June 2003. Jean died July 18, 2004. Richard has been residing at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars since January 2004.

Survivors include his children: Rachel and her husband Louis Westhoff of Le Mars, Marliyn and her husband Jose Rendon of Greenriver, Wyo., and Malaga, Spain, Roger and his wife, Kathleen Hawkins of Le Mars, and Barbara and her husband, Gary Dantes of Orr, Minn.; 13 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; a sister, Blanche Dennler of Merrill; a brother, David and his wife, Judy Hawkins of Orange City; two brothers-in-law, Peter and his wife, June Vanden Berge of Orange City and James and his wife, Judy of Traverse City, Mich.; 2 sisters-in-law, Ruth and her husband, Frank DeVries of Orange City and Darlene and her husband, Tom Kiernan of Savannah, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jean; a granddaughter Sarah Hawkins; and a brother, Albert Wayne Hawkins in infancy.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Seney United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Janes officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Le Mars. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present after 6 p.m. to greet friends followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue Saturday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Keith Westhoff, Travis Hawkins, Rick Carpenter, Jason Wiltgen, Jeremiah Wiltgen and Daniel Wiltgen. Honorary casketbearers will be Luis Rendon, Daryl Steinkamp, Earl Albert, Jeff Koch, Denny Harms and Bob Becker.
