Alma Knecht, 88, of Akron, Iowa passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at the Akron Care Center in Akron.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Pastor Beryl Hicks from the First Church of Christ in Akron will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation with family present will be from noon until service time on Sunday at the funeral home.

Alma Johanna Rika Meyer was born September 24, 1924 on the family farm in Johnson Township, rural Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Anna (Haage) Meyer. Alma attended country school and later high school in Akron. She graduated from Akron High School in 1942.

Alma was united in marriage to her sweetheart, James Knecht on November 16, 1942 in Dakota City, Nebraska. They farmed for many years in Union County, South Dakota and east of Akron. After retiring, they moved to the Ridgewood Apartments in Akron. In October of 2006, she became a resident of the Akron Care Center. Jim passed away October 29, 2008 in Akron.

Alma was a longtime member of the First Church of Christ in Akron. Through the years, Alma enjoyed doing word search puzzles and reading the Akron paper and the Sioux City Journal. She will be remembered for her cooking and baking, especially her chocolate chip cookies. She enjoyed visiting with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and the staff at the Akron Care Center. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her children: Charles (Barbee) Knecht of South Sioux City, NE and Charlene (Russ) Vander Schaaf of Akron, IA; 3 grandchildren: Jennifer Vander Schaaf of Cozad, NE, and her children, Tierney and Brendan Molden; Alan Knecht of South Sioux City, NE; and Aimee Vander Schaaf of Greensboro, NC; a brother: Lloyd (Betty) Meyer of Akron, IA; a sister in law: Ardie (Mark) Nixa of Dakota Dunes, SD; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Knecht; her siblings: Helen (Richard) Tentinger and Dorothy (Bill) Boomgaarden; her in laws: Bertha (Ervin) Smid, Velma (Alva) Port, Alfred (Merrilee) Knecht, Larry Knecht, and William Knecht.
