Former Seney Resident Died in Colorado

Mrs. George Hughes, well known former resident of Seney, died at Haxtun, Colorado, Wednesday, December 10, 1941. Death took place in the Haxtun hospital where she was taken two weeks ago after she fell down the basement steps of her home and suffered a fractured arm and shoulder blade.

Elizabeth Eason was born in Kent, England, June 25, 1868, and when a child of 9 months old came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Eason, to LeMars and settled on a farm north of Seney. She received her education in the rural schools, most of the time attending the Seney school. She was married to George Hughes on October 7, 1890. They celebrated their Golden Anniversary October 7, 1940. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes had no children of their own, but took into their home two nephews and a niece, whom they reared as their own, and who with the husband are left to mourn her death.

They are Leon Hughes of Omaha and Ralph Hughes of Council Bluffs, and Mrs. W. I. Jeffers of Haxtun, Colorado. She also leaves a number of half brothers and sisters, Bert Reeves of LeMars, Will Reeves, C.W. Reeves, Mrs. Martha Cook, Mrs. Frank Becker of Seney vicinity, and Mrs. Robert Chambers of Hazel, S.D.

The remains were brought to LeMars and the funeral held Saturday afternoon in the Seney church. Rev. W. N. Baker officiated and interment was made in the Seney cemetery, Mauer's funeral home in charge. At the time of her death she was 73 years of age.

Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased: Lawrence Reeves, Clarence Reeves, George Reeves, Ernest Reeves, Floyd Becker and John Arthur Cook.

Relatives of the deceased received word Monday last week of the critical condition of Mrs. Hughes. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Reeves, Will and C.W. Reeves and Mrs. Frank Becker left at once for Haxtun. Out of town relatives who came to attend the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Jeffers, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Jeffers, and George Hughes of Haxtun, Colorado; Ralph Hughes of Council Bluffs; Mr. and Mrs. Jay Donlin, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kurtz, Lawrence Reeves of Merrill; Mrs. and Mrs. Chris Henricksen, Mrs. George Ahrens of Alton; Mr. and Mrs. Herman of Carroll; Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Hauck, Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Park of Kingsley; Mr. and Mrs. Will Casler, Frank and Sherman Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. Burt Reeves of LeMars; Mrs. Susan Eason of Alton; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Reeves of Paullina.
