EVELYN ANNA ZIMMERMAN

Evelyn Anna Zimmerman was born January 29, 1920, at Merrill, Iowa, the daughter of Walter G. and Anna Lydia Lippke Zimmerman. Growing up at the farm home, she received her education at the Plymouth Township country school and High School at Merrill, Iowa. To attain a high school education during those depression years, required walking or bicycling four miles to Merrill to attend. The high school education was a valued attainment. Upon graduation from high school, occupational jobs were hard to come by. Fortunately, a job of light housekeeping and caring for the two daughters of Robert Dempster was obtained and held for four years. Jobs were becoming available again due to the close of World War II, so to become knowledgeable, Evelyn pursued further education by attending Business school in Sioux City; working for board and room. Evelyn worked a short time at the Michael-Leonard Seed House in Sioux City. Soon jobs became available in LeMars. A short lived one with the Triple A (later known as ASC) office. The big opportunity came when the manager of the Iowa Public Service Company came to the country to interview her in the corn field where she and sister Carol were picking corn by hand and being told to “Come to work Monday morning.” A forty year career for Iowa Public Service was enjoyed.

Retirement from IPS Co. came October 31, 1983, but was short lived as on November 9, 1983, a call received from the City of LeMars office seeking help to assist them with billing city sewer, which had just become a necessity. After nearly five years of working for the City terminated a 45 year long career. Being single, interests were centered around the immediate family and helping to maintain a garden and yard on a mainly traveled entrance to LeMars.

Evelyn died in Sioux City, Iowa, on June 11, 1996, in Sioux City, Iowa
