Lois Lancaster, 81, of Le Mars, died Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars.

Lois Lucille Peters was born Jan. 2, 1930, in Le Mars, the daughter of Oscar and Margaret (Borchers) Peters. Lois was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars and later confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Johnson Township, near Merrill.

She attended country school in Johnson Township. She attended high school in Le Mars and graduated in 1947.

Lois was united in marriage to Robert "Bob" Lancaster on Aug. 27, 1950, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Merrill. Early on, Lois and Bob farmed near Westfield. Lois taught country school at Johnson Township No. 5 and No. 1 for three years.

Later, she worked for St. Vincent's Hospital in Sioux City and Cora Hilger Accounting firm in Le Mars, before beginning her career with Iowa Department of Human Services in Plymouth County. Lois retired in 1991 after nearly 30 years of service.

Bob died Nov. 6, 2011, in Le Mars.

During retirement, Lois and Bob enjoyed taking many bus trips throughout the United States.

Lois was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars, having been active in W.E.L.C.A. for many years. Lois was active in 4-H for many years as well.

Lois volunteered for the Plymouth County Historical Museum for several years as well as volunteering for a number of years at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Center. Lois also volunteered her time at the Floyd Hospital Auxiliary Gift shop.

She enjoyed cross stitching and collecting many things "purple."

She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her five children: Bruce Lancaster (Diane) of Le Mars, Steve Lancaster (Jackie) of New River, Ariz., Barry Lancaster (Connie Nanninga) of West Des Moines, Lisa Shunkwiler (Don) of San Diego, Calif., and Todd Lancaster (Roma) of Le Mars; grandchildren: Bryk (Jennifer) Lancaster, Kyja (Derek) Johnson, Kyri Lancaster (Dan Van Voorst), Jana Lancaster, Katy Lancaster (Wes McCanse), Lindi Fine, Jake Lancaster (Ann Marie Hamel), Joe Lancaster, Drew Shunkwiler, Matt Lancaster and Zach Lancaster (Michelle Sluiter); two great-grandchildren, Graham Lancaster and Alice Swinford; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Shaw of Clarkfield, Minn.; a brother-in-law, Bill Lancaster (Leona) of Springfield, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Lucille Lancaster of Kansas City, Mo.; a brother-in-law, Don Lake (Dolores) of Le Mars; and many nieces and nephews.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert "Bob" Lancaster on Nov. 6, 2011; her sister: Joyce Lake; brothers-in-law, Edwin Lancaster (Marjorie), Edgar "Bun" Lancaster (Marie), and George "Wes" Lancaster; a sister-in-law, Evelyn "Sis" Anderson (Ralph); and a brother-in-law, Dean Shaw.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Le Mars. The Rev. Greg Gabriel will officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be after 4 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Jake Lancaster, Kyja Lancaster, Kyri Lancaster, Joe Lancaster, Zach Lancaster, and Drew Shunkwiler. Honorary casketbearers will be Bryk Lancaster, Matt Lancaster, Jana Lancaster, Katy Lancaster, and Lindi Fine.

Memorials can be made in Lois's name to Hospice of Siouxland or the Good Samaritan Society of Le Mars.
