Douglas “Doug” Lilly, 70, of rural Westfield, Iowa passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011 at his home near Westfield.

Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Westfield Congregational United Church of Christ in Westfield. Brian Howe, a pastor at RiverzEDGE Church in Sioux City, Iowa will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. Visitation with the family present will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the church. The Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.

Douglas Dean Lilly was born May 4, 1940 in Westfield, Iowa the son of Wallace E. and Petronella J. (Goede) Lilly. He was baptized at the Westfield Congregational Church. He attended school in Westfield and graduated from Westfield High School. He attended 2 years of college at the University of South Dakota.

He was drafted into the United States Army. He served his country while stationed in Texas for 2 years. He was honorably discharged. He returned to the area and made his home in Jefferson, South Dakota.

He began his lifelong career as a grain truck driver, working for several businesses in the area. He was united in marriage to Nancy Lowry on May 9, 1969 in Elk Point, South Dakota. They continued to make their home in Jefferson. For over 30 years, Doug was an owner operator of his own truck and hauled grain for many elevators in the area. In 1989, they moved to Westfield. Doug retired from trucking in 2004.

One of Doug’s greatest pastimes was tinkering with electronics and doing mechanical work. He was an amateur radio operator for over 30 years. Doug will also be remembered for his handy work, building or repairing just about anything. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family, especially his 3 grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife of over 41 years, Nancy of rural Westfield; his son: Wallace Lilly of Westfield; his daughter: Theresa Ferguson of Westfield and her children, Scott, Lilly, and Jennie; his brother: Gilbert Lilly (Peggy) of Westfield; 3 sisters in law: Gayle Lilly of Westfield, Mary Lilly of Jefferson, SD, and Marcia Jackson of Brandon, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Stan and Ross Lilly; 2 brothers in law: Warren Lowry and Richard Jackson; and his son in law: Tim Ferguson.
