Evelyn Marienau, 88, of Akron, Iowa formerly of Le Mars, Iowa passed away Monday, January 3, 2011 at the Akron Care Center in Akron following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Christ Lutheran Church, Grant Township, rural Le Mars, Iowa. Pastor Mike Schmidt will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 7, 2011, with the family present after 5:00 p.m., and a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church.
Evelyn Ruth Phelan was born August 24, 1922 on the family farm in Union Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of Wyatt and Josephine (Ostert) Phelan. She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith. She attended school in Union Township and graduated from Union Consolidated in 1940.
She was united in marriage to Henry G. Marienau on March 22, 1942 in Yuma, Arizona, where Henry was stationed while serving in the military. After his discharge, they returned to Plymouth County. They owned and operated a General Store in Brunsville, Iowa and later moved to their farm north of Brunsville. They continued to farm and operate the farm supply store at their farm until retiring. Later, they moved to Sioux City. Henry passed away September 3, 1992. After Henry passed away, Evelyn continued to live on her own until she went to live with her daughter and son in law on their farm east of Akron.
Evelyn has been a member of Christ Lutheran Church since 1942. She was also a member of Farm Bureau Women for many years. Through the years, she and Henry enjoyed teaching and staying active with square dancing. She was passionate about the outdoors and helping on the farm. She loved watching the birds and cats. She also enjoyed gardening and reading. But most of all, she loved to help her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her daughter, Randy Oetken and her husband Richard of rural Akron, Iowa; 4 grandchildren: Toby Oetken (Aling) of Florida, Staci Oetken and her special friend, Craig Givens of Florida, Jeffrey Oetken (Jessica) of Sioux City, IA and their son, Elijah, and Casey Oetken (Sara) of Florida; 2 sisters in law: Marie Phelan and Marilyn Phelan, both of rural Le Mars, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her siblings: Roy Phelan, Emmett Phelan, Leland Phelan, Marie Marienau, Raymond Phelan, and Helen Osterbuhr.
