Albert J. "Pete" Stoos, 82, of Le Mars, died unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars after suffering an apparent heart attack at his home.

Albert Joseph Stoos was born July 2, 1927, on the family farm near Seney, in Elgin Township, the son of Matthias and Bertha (Bender) Stoos.

On April 1, 1951, Pete entered in the U.S. Air Force and served his country during the Korean Conflict. He served with the 132nd Vehicle Squadron and was honorably discharged Sept. 26, 1952.

On June 5, 1955, Pete married Marlene A. Wolf at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. To this union, six children were born.

For many years Pete and his brothers owned and operated the Stoos Brothers Body Shop in Le Mars. Pete also was a fireman for many years and the former Fire Chief for the Le Mars Fire Department.

Pete was a member of the American Legion, Wasmer Post #241 for more than 50 years.

In his retirement years, Pete enjoyed gardening, walking his dogs and spoiling his grandkids.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 55 years, Marlene Stoos, of Le Mars; six children: Steve Stoos and his wife Cindy of Kimballton, Mark Stoos of Sioux City, Matt Stoos and his wife Sandy of Huntsville, Ala., Michelle Lancaster and her husband Tim of Alton, Christal Smith and her husband Warren of Butte, Mont., and Mary Stoos of Norfolk, Va.; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his brother Aloysius "Red" Stoos of Middleton, R.I.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Matthias and Bertha; three brothers, Sebastian, Paul and Herman Stoos; a sister-in-law Eleanor Stoos and two granddaughters, Amanda and Jamie Sue.

A memorial mass will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Kevin Richter officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars with graveside military honors provided by the American Legion, Wasmer Post #241. Visitation will be at the church for one hour prior to the Mass on Saturday. The Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars is assisting Pete's family with arrangements.
