LE MARS, Iowa -- Dorothy E. Utesch, 81, of LeMars passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church (Preston Township) in rural Akron, Iowa, with the Rev. Jerry Crow officiating. Burial will be in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer- Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
Dorothy Eugelina Johanna Haage was born April 11, 1926, in Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Elizabeth (Ludwigs) Haage. She attended country school near her home. Following her education, she assisted her family and area families with homemaking and farming.
On Nov. 9, 1945 , she and Merlin Utesch were united in marriage at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Akron. The couple made their home in Virginia, while Merlin was in the service. Following the war, they returned to the area and lived in various locations before settling in Plymouth County to farm. In 1974, the couple purchased the M&D Locker in Merrill, Iowa. They operated the locker until 1988. Retirement years were spent on an acreage near Craig, Iowa. Merlin passed away July 26, 1992. She then moved to Regency Village Apartments in LeMars. She was currently a resident at Brentwood Good Samaritan Village.
She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was active with Circle. She enjoyed gardening, embroidery, fishing, playing cards and was a wonderful cook and baker. Most importantly, she cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be lovingly remembered by her son and his wife, Curtis and Diane of Le Mars; a son and his wife, Roger and Sharon of Brunsville, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Janet and Steve Sneller of Le Mars ; a son, Stanley of Brunsville, Iowa; a daughter, Carol Dumas and her special friend, Todd Dahl of Kennedy, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Lois and Norman Varenhorst of Le Mars; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Utesch of Worthington, Minn., and Charlene Betsworth of Merrill, Iowa; and numerous niec es and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Merlin; and a grandson, Daniel on June 19, 1981.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will b e granddaughters
