Farrel "Fuzz" Harrington, 95, of Le Mars, died Monday, April 23, 2007, at Good Samaritan Village of Le Mars, surrounded by the love of his family and with the caring support of both Hospice and staff at Brentwood after a valiant struggle with melanoma.
Farrel Howard Harrington was born Dec. 4, 1911, in Sioux Township, rural Plymouth County, the son of Albert J. and Florence (Wilkenson) Harrington. He graduated from Liberty Consolidated School in 1930, where he lettered in basketball. Following his education, he worked for Ben Fish Tire in Sioux City.
Fuzz was united in marriage to Mathilda F. "Tillie" Siebens on June 8, 1940. at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Le Mars by the Rev. L.L. Belk. Fuzz and Tillie lived with her parents before moving to Westfield, where they lived in a two-room apartment in the back of the Standard Oil Station they operated. They later moved to a 40-acre farm 1-1/2 miles east of Westfield. In 1943, Fuzz and Tillie moved to her parents' farm, which was homesteaded by her grandfather, Peter Reese in 1883. They farmed the family homestead until 1989, after which they enjoyed summer breezes at the farm and pleasant winters in California. In 2003, he moved to Good Samaritan Village of Le Mars to join his beloved wife of 63 years.
Fuzz was a longtime member of Farm Bureau and St. Peter Lutheran Church in Brunsville. Fuzz found true fulfillment in farming. He loved to work, nurturing the land and livestock. He was an honest, caring man who had a gift of story telling and jokes, capturing the hearts and imaginations of anyone that knew him. Music and dancing were his passions. Fuzz and Tillie were a delight to watch on the dance floor.
Above all else, he deeply loved his family and treasured his friends. His legacy will live on in his pride and joy of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be missed but remembered with the fervent belief of the heavenly life hereafter.
Those survivors left to cherish their memories of him include two sons: Vernon F. Harrington and his wife, Karen, and Loren H. Harrington both of Le Mars; two grandchildren, Bethene R. Adams and her husband Joe L. of Council Bluffs, and Audra L. Harrington of Waconia, Minn.; three great-grandchildren: Kathryn (Katie) Adams, Alexander (Alex) Adams, and Brodie Harrington; two sisters, Joy Weigel and her daughter Sharon Morris and her children of Omaha, Neb., and Ann Maynard and her husband Delbert of Akron, and their sons, Jay Maynard, and Rob Maynard and his wife Abby and their children; and his godchild, Carol Willer and her husband Stan of Le Mars.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wilbur and Walter Jay Harrington and one sister, Gertrude Maynard.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Brunsville. The Rev. Dan Gerrietts will officiate. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitations will be after 3 p.m. Thursday with the family present after 6 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
Memorials can be made in Fuzz's name to Hospice of Siouxland and St. Peter Lutheran Church at Brunsville.
