The Rev. George J. Jennings, 95, of Le Mars, died Monday, May 18, 2009, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

George James Jennings was born Jan. 7, 1914, in Le Mars, the son of William and Charlotte (Cocks) Jennings. Much of his childhood was spent with his uncle and aunt Le Roy and Mable Jennings. George and Mary June Kern were united in marriage Jan. 1, 1936.

George graduated from Northwestern Bible and Missionary Training School in Minneapolis, Minn., and received undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Minnesota.

He served on the staff of First Baptist church in Minneapolis, for a number of years. He was a professor of anthropology at the University of Minnesota, Bethel College in Minnesota, Northwestern College in Minnesota, Wheaton College in Illinois, and Geneva College in Pennsylvania. He also was a member of the board for the MECO mission agency for many years.

George traveled extensively, often accompanied by his wife, June, doing research for his anthropology studies. They lived in Iran for two years after George received a Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Tehran.

George was the author of several books. When he retired, they returned to live in Le Mars. During those years, he wrote an article for the Le Mars Daily Sentinel called "In the Le Mars Mold."

He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

George is survived by three sisters-in-law, Florence Jennings, Helen Kale, and Lois Tindall, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, June; his parents; brothers, John and William; sisters Myrtle Pries and Leona Cuff; sister-in-law Helen Jennings and brothers-in-law Ernie Pries and William Cuff.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Jon Meredith will officiate. Burial will take place at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.

The family of George Jennings requests that memorials be directed to the First Baptist Church of Le Mars.
