HURON, S.D. -- Doris Van Essen, age 80, of 760 Montana S.W., Huron, S.D., died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.

Doris Margaret Dambrink Van Essen was born April 18, 1923, in Le Mars, the daughter of Dow and Rika (Behrens) Dambrink. She attended Le Mars public schools. Doris was confirmed at St. John's Church in 1937. She married Bert Van Essen on March 8, 1943 in South Sioux City, Neb. They moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., after their marriage. Two children were born to this union, Mary Doris in 1944 and Bert Lee in 1947.

Doris was famous for her bountiful breakfasts, and her skillful hand at rummy and Chinese checkers. She was an example of how to form close and caring friendships. Doris was quick to hand out $20 bills. She cared for others, and in caring for others, she found life.

She is survived by her son, Bert Van Essen, Jr., of Gettysburg, S.D.; a son-in-law, Ken Baack, Sr., of Le Mars; six grandchildren, Beth Baack, of Le Mars, Kay and her husband, Mark Ryan, of Le Mars, Ken Baack, Jr., of Le Mars; Bert and his wife, Kathy Van Essen, of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Gerad Van Essen, of the United States Army, stationed in Baghdad, Iraq and Andy Van Essen, of Geddes, S.D.; five great-grandchildren, Tom and Jennie Miller, Alyssa and Tyler Van Essen, and Rose Ryan; and two very special friends, Mary McGaa and Bernice Renshaw.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Mary Baack; a sister, Marian; and two brothers, Bill and Dick.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with The Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating. Burial will be in the Le Mars Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today (Friday) at the Kuhler Funeral Home and prior to the service at the church on Saturday morning.

Memorials may be directed to the HOPE Therapeutic Riding School of Huron.
