AKRON, Iowa -- Melvin Johnson, 91, of Akron died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at the Akron City Convalescent Center.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron, with the Rev. Curtis Matson officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Melvin was born Oct. 5, 1910, the son of Carl and Elsa (Berglund) Johnson. He married Ella Smith on July 8, 1933, in Sioux Falls, S.D. She died Nov. 23, 2000. He farmed and sold seed corn.
He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He served on the rural school board for the Breezy Hills and Stoney Point schools, and served as a trustee for Portland Township. In his free time he loved to garden both flowers and vegetables, fishing and he just loved to farm.
Survivors include two sons, Clifford of Akron, and Russell and his wife, Judy, of Sac City, Iowa; a brother, Harold Johnson of Akron; two sisters, Leone Dewey of Westfield, and Eleanor Jarrett of Washington; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter; a brother, Ernest Johnson; two sisters, Norma Hinrickson and Alice Delano; and a grandson, Scott Johnson.
