Ernest E. "Ernie" Wiener, 67, of rural Hinton, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, following a brief illness.
Ernest Eugene Wiener was born Nov. 16, 1938, in Lincoln Township, rural Hinton, the son of Albert and Elda (Ludwig) Wiener. He attended country school near his home and later graduated from Merrill High School in 1957.
Ernie began his career in farming with his family near Hinton. He would later join in a farming partnership with his brothers Mike and Randy in the early 1980's. Ernie also drove truck for some of the neighboring farmers. He served in the Iowa Army National Guard for nine years with the 133rd Inf. Co. K based in Le Mars.
Ernie was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He ushered for many years and had served on the Building and Grounds Committee. He was a Trustee for Lincoln Township and a member of Farm Bureau, Corn Advantage, and the Farmer's Cooperative of Hinton. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing cards, and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes. He especially enjoyed his nieces and nephews and butchering with his family around the holidays.
He will be lovingly remembered by his five brothers, Darrell and Janet of Hinton, Michael of Hinton, Randy of Hinton, Arnold and Kelly of Schaller, and Leland of Kingsley; six sisters, Glenda Wiener of Le Mars, Arlene Wiener of Le Mars, Marylyn and Don Muecke of Hinton, LaVonne of Hinton, Elaine and James Droegmiller of Cushing, and Pat Wiener of Rock Rapids and her special friend, Jim Verrips of Sheldon; a sister-in-law, Doris Wiener of Humboldt; 13 nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles, Melvin and Elfrieda Ludwig of Merrill, Jim and Naoma Peterson of Huron, S.D., Eugene Taute of Le Mars, Gertrude Wiener of Sioux City, and Gail Wiener of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Thomas; and two infant brothers, James and Carmen.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Gary Landsness and the Rev. Greg Gabriel will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service set for 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.
