LE MARS, Iowa -- Kathryn Schipper, 81, of Le Mars died suddenly Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present after 6:30 p.m., a parish rosary at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Scriptural wake service at 8 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. Friday until service time at the church.
Kathryn Christina Orban was born April 13, 1923, on the family farm in Johnson Township near Le Mars to John and Mary (Dondelinger) Orban. She was raised on the farm and attended country school near her home. As a young woman, Kathryn worked for Sheehan Produce in Le Mars.
Kathryn was united in marriage to Lee Schipper on Nov. 29, 1944, at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. While Lee was in the service, they lived in California. Upon returning to Le Mars in 1946, Kathryn continued to work for Sheehan Produce for several years. She also enjoyed providing care for many children throughout the years. Kathryn's life was very much centered around her family. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a longtime member of St. James Catholic Church, where she belonged to the Altar Society and was an active member of the church prayer chain. She enjoyed gardening and embroidering.
Survivors include seven children, Sharon and her husband, Dean Boettger of Marshalltown, Iowa, Wayne and his wife, Marleen Schipper of Le Mars, Linda and her husband, Nick Nemmers of Le Mars, Merlin and his wife, Kaye Schipper of Le Mars, Diane Schipper of Sioux City, Deb and her husband, Brian Hettwer of Le Mars and Shelly Schipper of Terre Haute, Ind.; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marcie Huls of Le Mars, Sis Huls and her husband, Al of Akron, Iowa and Tina Feller of Le Mars; a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Vi Orban of Le Mars; a sister-in-law, Karen Breuer of Le Mars; a brother-in-law and his wife, Wendell and Patty Schipper of Fayetteville, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lee Schipper in 1995; two sisters, Clara Wilmes and Mamie Harms; three brothers, John, Joe and Nick Orban; a sister-in-law; and six brothers-in-law.
Pallbearers will be David Schipper, Brad Schipper, Michael Boettger, Joseph Boettger, Cliff Herman, Kyle Herman and Brady Hettwer. Honorary pallbearers will be Paula Skarich, Julie Stock, Nicole Hoekstra, Jackie Hoag, Christi Obbink, Jill Martin, Kelli Herman, Casie Sparks, Beckey Bauder and Brandi Hettwer.
