LE MARS, Iowa -- Eugene "Bud" Scholer, 76, of Le Mars died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, ELCA, with the Rev. Jean Morse officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 5 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home, 107 12th Street, SE, Le Mars.

Mr. Scholer was born May 11, 1925, in Le Mars, the son of Frank and Emma (Thielen) Scholer. He graduated from Le Mars High School in 1944, attended Westmar College and studied photography at the Art Center in Los Angeles, Calif. He served in the Coast Guard for four years.

He married Mabel McDougall on Nov. 28, 1946. Together they raised three children, Margaret "Meg" Holmes, Barbara Birmingham and Steven. He was a sales representative for Farner Bocken Company, owner of the Western Auto Store in Le Mars, and operated Scholer Real Estate. He served as mayor of Le Mars from January 1960 to 1968, and again from 1970 to 1973. In 1973 he was appointed Plymouth County Judicial Magistrate and served as such until his retirement in 1990.

He was a member of numerous civic and social organizations, including St. John's American Lutheran Church, American Legion, Elks Lodge, Aksarben Ambassadors and Le Mars Sportsman's Club. During his retirement he was an avid gardener, photographer, woodworker and sportsman.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Barbara and Patrick Birmingham of Bloomfield, Neb.; a son-in-law, Jack Holmes of Ida Grove, Iowa; a son and his wife, Steven and Susan Scholer of Omaha; grandchildren, Frank and Paige Scholer and Robert Holmes; a brother and his wife, Darrell and Pearl Scholer of Omaha; brothers-in-law and their wives, Bill and Dee McDougall, Doug and Vonice McDougall and Mark and Jeanie McDougall, all of Le Mars, Jim and Von McDougall of Minnetonka, Minn., Dick and Pat McDougall of Okoboji, Iowa, Nick and Donna McDougall of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Denny and Lynn McDougall of Kansas City, Mo.; sisters-in-law and their husbands, Edyth and Gene Swanson of Mankato, Minn., and Janice and Dave Petry of Hudson, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a daughter, Margaret.
