Services held for retired postal carrier, Clair McCorkell

Clair A. [Aubrey] McCorkell, 88, lifelong resident of Akron and retired postal carrier died Sunday, Nov. 6, 1983 at his home after a long illness.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church in Akron. The Rev. Lester Norton officiated. Soloist Bob Brown sang “Beyond the Sunset” and “How Great Thou Art”, accompanied on the organ by Genevieve Fickbohm. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery under the direction of the Schroeder funeral home. A prayer service in his memory was held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

Pallbearers were Viggo Henriksen, Bill Joseph, Gordon Gerling, Douglas McCorkell, Donald Powell, and Gerd Ludwigs.

Mr. McCorkell was born March 27, 1895 to Joseph and Ida Keech McCorkell on a farm near Akron. He graduated from Akron High School in 1913 and attended Iowa State College at Ames for two years. He married Mabel Pike December 20, 1924 in Sioux City, and since that time made their home in Akron.

He was appointed rural mail carrier March 19, 1925 a position he held for 35 years, retiring July 1, 1960. During those 35 years of carrying mail, Clair took only eight days off for illness. After retirement, he worked part time at the Frozen Food Center in Akron.

Mr. McCorkell was an avid baseball fan, and cared for his flowers and bounteous garden.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he held many offices and served as an usher for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Rural Letter Carrier Association.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel of Akron; two daughters, Mrs. Phyllis Wilson of Azusa, Calif., Mrs. Gladys Clarey of Covina, Calif; a brother, Leslie of North Sioux City; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Edward McCorkell in 1970; one brother, Perry and one sister, Ruby Herzig.
