Arnold J. Steichen, 88, of Sioux City, formerly of Remsen, Iowa, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at his home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Revs. John McGuirk and Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 220 and V.F.W. Post 3328. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., all at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
Arnold was born May 21, 1914, in rural Alton, Iowa, the son of Nicholas and Mary (Henrecy) Steichen. He was raised in the Alton area and received his education in the rural school system. He then operated a tank wagon in the Remsen area for Marcus Oil Company of Marcus, Iowa, and also operated the Red Star Machinery Company in Remsen.
He married Lorraine Frank on Sept. 1, 1937, at Struble, Iowa. They made their home in Remsen. He entered the U.S. Army on April 3, 1944, and served until being discharged on Dec. 15, 1945. He then returned to Remsen, where he owned and operated Frontier Motel, Midwest Service and Golden Pheasant. Lorraine died Nov. 3, 1977. Arnold retired and moved to Sioux City in 1979.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, the Knights of Columbus and Petroleum Marketers of Iowa.
Survivors include four sons and their wives, Gary and Ann of Marion, Iowa, Doug and Katie, David and Susie and Dan and Sue, all of Remsen; six daughters, Shirley Bass, Sandy and her husband, Dennis Phillips and Debbie Hagey, all of Remsen, Mary Ellen and her husband, Robert Brady of South Sioux City, Vickie and her husband, David Peters of Tempe, Ariz., and Nancy and her husband, Gary McMahan of Omaha, Neb.; 34 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a brother, Francis of San Diego, Calif.; seven sisters, Bertha and her husband, Ed Thill of Remsen, Helen and her husband, Ray Glassmaker of Cleghorn, Iowa, Rose Lux of Denver, Colo., Joan Teachout of Marion, Iowa, Betty Crossman of Lakewood, Colo., Marian Utesch of Oyens, Iowa, and Patty and her husband, Leonard Reinert of Indianola, Iowa; and three sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Steichen and Emiline Steichen, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Violet Steichen of Maurice, Iowa.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a son in infancy; four sons-in-law, Tom Rosburg, Charles Bass, Ron Rosenquist and Steve Hagey; six brothers, Art, Ray, Clarence, Alphonse, Matt and Lee; and three sisters, Sophia Dieterman, Gertrude Biever and Catherine Steichen.
Pallbearers will be Tom "T.J." Rosburg, Steven Phillips, Russel Rosenquist, Michael Steichen, Michael Hagey and Ryan McMahon.
Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Rosenquist, Jeff Phillips, Chad McMahon, Matt, Austin and Andy Steichen and Adam Dwyer.
