Eldon Small
AKRON, Iowa -- Eldon Small, 79, of Akron died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at his residence.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Akron, with the Rev. Larry Madsen officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Hoschler Post 186 of Akron. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Eldon Small was born Nov. 25, 1923, in Akron, the son of Avery and Grace (Stinton) Small. He attended Akron High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
He married Josephine Hardacre on Oct. 22, 1947, in Le Mars, Iowa. He owned and operated Small's Trucking Co. for 25 years and they managed a liquor store in Akron until his retirement.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and was a 52-year member of American Legion Hoschler Post 186. He served on the Akron Fire Department for 15 years, serving as assistant fire chief and as fire chief. In his free time, he enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, playing cards and driving.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine; two sons and their wives, Bruce and Tami Small of Akron, and David and Debra Small of Brunsville, Iowa; three daughters and their husbands, Sandra and Dennis McMillan of Akron, Pam and Marvin Kaskie and Nancy and John Jacobs, all of Hawarden, Iowa; seven brothers and their wives, Kenneth and Evelyn Small, James and Edith Small and Gayland and Selma Small, all of Akron, Clayton and Marilyn Small of Sioux City, Roscoe and Evelyn Small of Le Mars, Iowa, Fay and Burma Small of Borger, Texas, and Clinton and Marilyn Small of Dunlap, Iowa; two sisters, Vernice Blum of Sioux City, and Ramona Govig of Atlantic, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Claudia Small of South Sioux City; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Wilma Baldwin and Karen Small; and three brothers, Vernard, Arvel and Ivyl Small.
