George E. Nussbaum, 74, Plymouth County native and lifelong resident, died Wednesday (Nov. 30, 1983) at Plymouth Manor Care Center after a lengthy illness.

Funeral serviced will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s American Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Pastor Tom Lee will officiate and burial will be in Le Mars Memorial cemetery under direction of the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home.

A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

George Elmer Nussbaum was born May 18, 1909, in Elgin Township, Plymouth County, to George and Amelia Behnke Nussbaum. He was one of seven brothers.

He attended public schools in Elgin Township and later went into farming partnership with a brother in 1930. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II in September 1942, serving until October 1944 when he was discharged.

He worked as a mechanic for his brother and later for Weenink Motors in Le Mars until late 1945. In 1946 he started farming.

His marriage to Clara Westhoff Von Hagel took place Feb. 14, 1951, at St. John’s American Lutheran Church where he was a member.

In 1970 the couple quit farming and George drove a Le Mars Community school bus until 1974 when he retired and the couple moved to Le Mars.

Survivors are his wife; Clara; a son, Gene, Le Mars; one daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Joan) Schuette, Valley Springs, S.D.; a granddaughter, Crystal Joan Schuette; two brothers, Conrad and Glenn, both of Le Mars; and a grandson, Scott Michael Nussbaum.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Edward, John, Clarence and Theodore.
