REMSEN, Iowa -- Evelyn Pottebaum, 87, of Remsen died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. Celebrating the Mass will be Msgrs. Nicholas Ruba and Richard Zenk and the Revs. Tim Johnson, John McGuirk, Thomas Hart, James Tigges and Richard Remmes. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with a rosary at 3 p.m. by the Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters of America, and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Evelyn was born Feb. 4, 1915, to Mike and Anna (Schneiders) Galles in rural Remsen. She was raised in the Remsen area and received her education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen. In 1930, she moved with her family to a farm near Granville, Iowa.

On Jan. 3, 1934, she married Martin Pottebaum at Granville. They made their home near Remsen until moving to Sioux City in 1955, where they owned and operated a laundry business. In 1956, Evelyn started a day care in her home and also took in laundry in her home. They moved to Remsen after retiring in 1990. Martin died Jan. 5, 1999.

She was a member of Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City, where she was active as a Eucharistic Minister. She had been member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America since 1937, and of the Christian Mothers since 1948, all of Remsen. Evelyn had a deep commitment to her faith, a strong love of children and was an advocate of Catholic education. She spent many hours donating time and baking for Catholic schools.

Survivors include six sons and their wives, Cyril and Leslie of Arvada, Colo., Ron and Judy of Pierson, Iowa, Ken and Lisa of Jefferson, S.D., Mike and Pam and Marty and Kandy, all of Sioux City, and Mark and Lynda of Bronson, Iowa; seven daughters, Shirley and her husband, Joe Stoll of Primghar, Iowa, Darlene and her husband, John Dickes, Doris and her husband, Ron Gettner, all of Sioux City, Clarice and her husband, Daniel Groff, Betty and her husband, Ron Heidesch, and Julie Pottebaum, all of Remsen, and Joyce and her husband, Mike Sunclades of Bellevue, Neb.; 54 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Arnold Galles, Milton and his wife, Arlene Galles, and Marvin and his wife, Margie Galles, all of Remsen.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Suzanne in infancy and Janice McGinnis; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Cyril (Mary) Pottebaum; a grandson, Mike Stoll; a granddaughter, Brenda Sunclades; and a brother, Emmanuel Galles.
